About BaiYu
BaiYu was born in China with a rare genetic disorder called Albinism. Along with having albinism comes many difficult eye problems. BaiYu was abandoned after birth because she was different. She was then adopted by Lisa Fisher at the age of 2 years. BaiYu came to the United States and has grown up in a family of 6.
BaiYu has 2 older brothers, one older sister and currently lives with her grandma and her mom Lisa Fisher. Lisa currently works for Atlassian.
BaiYu is visually impaired, she is not completely blind, but with the little amount of sight she has, she has done great things and hopes to inspire others to show them that anything is possible, whether someone believes in you or not. More often than not, the term legally blind makes people think you can’t see anything, however this is a false assumption. Legally blind means you have a visual acuity of 20/200 with glasses, contacts or other means of correction.
Growing up, BaiYu was a hyper child, always climbing on things and running around the house. Her parents put her in gymnastics where she excelled at many events. BaiYu continued gymnastics until the age of 10. BaiYu has switched gyms in hopes of finding new challenges and adventures, however, with the disappointment of being in the highest level at such a young age, BaiYu decided to quit. She then went on to pursue her journey as a dancer.
BaiYu has trained in numerous styles of dance including but not limited to: ballet, pointe, modern, lyrical, contemporary, jazz, tap, acro, etc. BaiYu has also worked with some of the industries largest choreographers and artists including Travis Wall, Mark Meismer, tWitch and more! BaiYu has also worked with dance companies like Momix, Body Traffic, Hubbard Street, Peridance, etc.
BaiYu began dancing competitively in 2016, she has attended competitions like YAGP, NUVO, 24/7 and more!
Many years after beginning her career in dance BaiYu was asked to be in a film called “The Promise of Iowa” this film was made to show others what dancing and going to school is like with a disability. BaiYu’s story was later featured in the Des Moines Register and on various Tv stations.
